NPL offers several membership levels:
- Free Membership: $0 – Allows you to record your basic stats (wins/losses). It’s great for getting started, but it does not include access to playoffs or any member perks (no championship eligibility, swag, discounts, etc.).
- Season Membership: $59 – One-time fee for the season to join the Doubles division. This includes everything: you’ll be eligible for playoffs and the championship, and you’ll receive league perks like NPL™ swag, sponsor discounts, raffle entries, and awards. No additional fees are required for postseason – it’s all covered.
- Ambassador Membership: $99 – This includes the Season Membership plus designates you as an NPL™ Ambassador. Ambassadors get an exclusive kit (official NPL™ shirt, cap, cards, banner, etc.) and help promote/organize NPL™ in their region. It comes with all perks and some extra bonus rewards for your leadership. All membership fees are one-time for the whole season – there are no hidden charges for playoffs or finals.
Yes, you can – but we recommend upgrading before the season begins if possible. If you play as a free member and then decide to pay later, your league stats will reset at the moment you upgrade. In other words, games you played while on the free plan won’t count toward your ranking once you’re a paid member (you’d be starting from zero from that point). To avoid losing any progress, it’s best to join as a paid member early on (by the season start date).
No partner needed! One of NPL™’s best features is that you can play with anyone in the league. You don’t have to sign up with a fixed doubles partner or group. Any time you want to play, you can challenge a fellow member. In fact, during the season any rated NPL™ member can play with or against any other rated member – total flexibility. So, if your usual partner is busy, you can find another member for a match. This makes scheduling games much easier than traditional leagues where a set partner is required.
NPL is very community-driven. Once you join, you’ll get access to our member network. Here are some ways to set up games:
- Use TeamReach: We have an official TeamReach group for NPL™ players in each state (e.g., NPLFL for Florida, NPLNY for New York, etc.). Join the group for your area – it’s like a meetup forum where members post looking for games. You can drop a message like “Anyone up for a game this Saturday?” and connect with others easily.
- Local Ambassadors: NPL™ Ambassadors often organize local rec games, socials, and mini-tournaments. They might announce, “We’re having NPL™ open play at XYZ courts on Sunday.” These are great to join – you’ll meet many players at once.
- NPL™ Facebook Group: Our Facebook community (with thousands of members)
is another place to interact – you can post that you’re looking for practice or see if someone has already posted an invitation. - Member Directory: Through the NPL™ website, you can see who’s in your area (by filtering members by state/city) and reach out via the site’s messaging or the contact info they’ve shared.
In short, you have lots of avenues. Most NPL™ players are enthusiastic to play, so don’t be shy about reaching out – you’ll likely get a game set up in no time!
Yes. In order for a match result to be recorded in the NPL™ system, all participants need to be NPL™ members in that division. For example, if you’re playing a doubles match, both you and your partner and both opponents must be members. If you play with a non-member, that game won’t count towards NPL™ standings. (This encourages everyone on the court to join the fun!). If you have friends who aren’t members yet, invite them to sign up so their games with you will count.
Nope! You can play NPL™ matches anytime, anywhere that’s convenient. Think of NPL™ as running in the background of your normal pickleball life – any time you play against fellow NPL™ members, you can agree to call it an “NPL™ match” and submit the score. It doesn’t have to be at a specific club or on a certain night. It could be during open play at your local park, a meet-up you organized, or even while traveling (if you meet an NPL™ member in another city). As long as you play by NPL™ rules and report the score, it counts. This means your regular recreational games double as league games – hence our motto, “Make Your Rec Games Count!”
Logging a match result is simple. After you finish a game, just log in to your NPL™ account on our website and click “Enter Scores.” You’ll need to enter who you played with/against and the final score. One team member from each side (for doubles) should verify the submission. Once submitted, the system updates the standings automatically. Tip: It’s best to enter scores immediately or same-day while everything is fresh. If there’s ever a discrepancy, contact support and we’ll sort it out.
The NPL™ standings update in real time as scores are reported. You can check the leaderboard on the site anytime to see your current ranking. We also periodically post standings updates on our Facebook page. Throughout the season, you’ll see movement as players add wins (or losses). At the season’s end (cutoff date), final rankings will determine playoff qualifiers. We freeze the rankings then for seeding into the State/Regional tournaments.
At the end of the regular season, the top players in each division (often the top few from each state or region, depending on participation) will be invited to the State/Regional Playoffs. Those are usually single-elimination or double-elimination brackets held either in person or virtually coordinated. The exact format can vary, but it’s announced in advance. Winners from each state or region advance to the National Championship tournament. The National Championship is typically an in-person event where the best of the best competes for the national title. It’s an exciting finals event – winners are crowned NPL™ National Champions for that season. We provide details (location, format, dates) to all qualified players as the time comes. Importantly, remember that as a paid member your entry into playoffs/championship is covered – you won’t pay extra to play in these high-level events.
NEW! An accurate A.I. skill level analysis by our PARTNER DinkMate.ai
The Official NPL™ has a unique ranking system calculated by wins, losses, and points scored. As the NPL™ season progresses, players can track their standings in real time and measure their performance against others across their state and nationwide.
NPL™ follows standard pickleball rules for playing matches (so if you’re used to USAPA rules, there’s no difference in how you play and score). However, because NPL™ is self-regulated (players arrange their own games), we have a few additional rules and code of conduct policies to ensure fairness:
- No falsifying scores: Obviously, you should only report scores from real games you’ve played. Our system relies on the honor code, but we do have checks. If someone is caught intentionally submitting fake match results, there are penalties.
- Fair play and sportsmanship: Treat these matches like any tournament – good line calls, courteous behavior, and so on. If there are disputes, resolve them on-court or involve an ambassador to mediate.
Equipment and court: Any standard pickleball court and ball are fine. If you’re playing an official playoff or championship, we’ll specify the ball type, etc., but during the season just agree on equipment with your opponent. We actually have a dedicated Rules page you can refer to for the detailed NPL™ rulebook and code of conduct.
This is important. Since players report their own scores, NPL™ has a clear anti-cheating policy:
- First offense: If someone is found to have reported a false score or engaged in unethical behavior, they get a warning. We believe in second chances, but we document the incident.
- Second offense: The consequences escalate – the player will be required to submit video proof for all future matches they play. That means if they want their scores to count, they must record the games on video. This inconvenience is a deterrent and ensures honesty.
- Third offense: Suspension from the league with no refund. The player will be banned from the current season and even barred from the next season. Essentially, three strikes and you’re out. NPL™ takes integrity seriously. In addition, any complaints of severe poor sportsmanship, abuse, or cheating can be reviewed by the NPL™ Commissioner, whose decisions are final. The vast majority of our players compete with honesty and respect, so issues are very rare. We have these rules in place just to keep it fair for everyone.
Great question! NPL™ offers a unique value that complements your other play:
- More Play, Less Cost: For roughly the cost of one typical weekend tournament, NPL™ gives you six months of play. You can play dozens of matches on your own schedule, which is way more court time and competition for your money.
- Flexibility: No need to commit to specific league nights or find a permanent doubles partner. NPL™ fits into your routine. Busy one month? Play more the next. It’s as structured or as casual as you want it to be.
- Broader Competition: NPL™ connects you with players beyond your local club. You get to see how you stack up nationally. It’s exciting to have a national ranking and compete for a national title, something local leagues can’t offer.
- Big Rewards: Instead of just a medal, you’re playing for significant prizes and prestige. If you become a state champ or national champ, that’s a big deal! Plus, as we mentioned, top NPL™ players might catch the eye of pro scouts or leagues – it can be a stepping-stone to higher levels.
Community & Fun: NPL™ isn’t just competition; it’s a community. You’ll make friends across states, join in on socials, and be part of a growing pickleball movement. Many players find NPL™ simply makes their everyday pickleball games more meaningful and exciting. In summary, NPL™ adds a layer of competitive fun to the games you’re already playing. It’s the next evolution of enjoying pickleball.
